Art in the Streets. An Exhibition

Now, if only our educational visits could stretch to a visit to  L.A. then we would all go to see the Art in the Streets exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art. An amazing and exciting collection that spans the history of street art. Go here to explore the exhibition in more detail. Banksy has made a generous and important donation to the MOCA which means that entry to the exhibition is free on every Monday. He has been quoted as saying:

“I don’t think you should have to pay to look at graffiti. You should only pay if you want to get rid of it,” Banksy; source The Curve

Do you agree with this statement? Why? Do you think that this should extend to all works of art?

  1. Art isn't just a paintbrush and canvas. Street art is an expression and often a statment, therefore as Banksy quoted you shouldn't pay to see it. Unlike exhibtions and galleries where you pay to see the work and that is the main priority, street art is all around you when you walk down the street. Also much of what is seen and said in street art cannot be put in a gallery therefore it would be a violation to pay to see it.

  2. Firstly, I think that people shouldn't have to pay for Street Art as it's like any other art in a gallery. Although it started on the streets, I would personally class it as art. I agree with Banksy's view 'You should only have to pay for it if you wan't to get rid of it' because I think it's unfair to treat Street Art differently to any other artwork.

  3. I agree, you shouldn't have to pay to see something that was made on a building or wall which people the passers by see all the time, if you want to see it so badly go then they should go and see it, street art shouldn't be about the moniez or putting it into an exihibition. x

  4. I agree with Banksy. To put it shortly.

To begin with, I dont think people should have to pay to SEE artwork anyway, let alone street art. I'm sure most artists don't create work for money but for the sake of art so I'm sure most people would agree. I'm aware that my statement also gives some problems as to how to actually create an exibition. but, I'll keep this short

Art is Art. You shouldn't have to pay to see art - just my opinion.

  5. I agree and disagree with Banksy, first of all I think street art shouldn’t be paid to be seen as the artist obviously do not intend to sell his/her work if they created it on a street wall, instead to convey their talent and entertain audience, on the other hand, when the work is exported to an exhibition, it should be paid for; since it’s going to cost the exhibition to publicise it to the audience. My opinion is, depending on how the artist presents his work determines how it should be publicised, whether sold or given free.
