This weeks work.

Okay, time to leave the computer for a couple of weeks (in lessons at least - i'm still expecting 2-3 blog entries a week). You will need to create your first art history page in your sketch book today. This should include 2-3 pictures, one artist copy (using a range of techniques) and then your own artwork using the techniques that you have learned. Your own artwork should be based on your theme - your moodboard should help you here.

You can post your sketchbook pages on your blog and talk about your ideas behind the page. Remember the layout of your sketchbook is vital, be creative and think design in everything that you do.

This task will take place over this week and next.

Douglas Wilson

Using the traditional method of letterpress printing on printed ephemera, Douglas Wilson creates bold illustrated statements. His collection of vintage maps printed with the words GET LOST creates a strong, playful link between imagery and text.

Douglas Wilson is also responsible for Linotype: The Film. well worth a watch (especially Jack - studying typography).

Deadlines!!

Keep checking the deadlines tab of this blog...when a deadline is getting close it will become bright red. Remember that July 22nd is your next one.

Problems, problems....

Hi everyone, I am having problems posting comments on your blogs through this account, so I have used another blog name that I have instead. A Cat Called Fidget. So any comments from that name is from me.

Update. Okay, so I think I have solved the problem, if any of you are having the same issue, you need to clear your cookies and history from the browser that you are using. So...go to Tools>Internet options>General - then delete history.

Trip update

Hi, the trip has been arranged today, obviously im not in, so haven't been able to get a tripletter out. The cost is £25 and we are going on the FRIDAY 1st July. If you can, please get the money into finance on Monday. I will give you a letter to get filled in, but if you could get the money in asap that would be great. Sorry to rush you. Have a great weekend.

***TRIP***

Okay, so I am trying to organise a trip for us to go to the Design Museum in London to see the iconic Dutch graphic designer Wim Crowel. The plan is to take the train into London on Tuesday 28th of June and go over to the design Museum. At the moment the trip would cost £20 per student. This is however based on 10 students going. The price will have to go up if we are unable to secure 10 places as we will not be able to get the group rate for entry into the design museum or cheap rail tickets. I am going to open the trip to Graphics students first and then to the A level art and textiles students. Please let me know by the end of Wednesday if you will be interested in coming so that I can decide if the trip is viable. It would be a fantastic experience and will look great in your sketchbooks for your A2  project.

Art in the Streets. An Exhibition

Now, if only our educational visits could stretch to a visit to  L.A. then we would all go to see the Art in the Streets exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art. An amazing and exciting collection that spans the history of street art. Go here to explore the exhibition in more detail. Banksy has made a generous and important donation to the MOCA which means that entry to the exhibition is free on every Monday. He has been quoted as saying:

“I don’t think you should have to pay to look at graffiti. You should only pay if you want to get rid of it,” Banksy; source The Curve

Do you agree with this statement? Why? Do you think that this should extend to all works of art?

Connor Harrington - street art+

Connor Harrington is an Irish street artist, based in London, who combines fine art and street art to create powerful and complex images both on canvas and on walls. His work is a mix of realism and abstract, the fine details of the figures juxtaposed against their explosive surroundings. His use of type combines street tag style spray text and precise fonts, together they reflect the order and chaos in his paintings.

Connor also keeps a blog, his work is laid out through images from his sketchbooks and canvases. He gets to work with some of the most prominent and exciting artists who are leading the street art scene at present. Check out more of his work at the Lazarides website.

Welcome

Welcome to your year 13 assignment. Your project title will be Passions and Obsessions and you will have until February 2012 to complete the project. The outcome of your project is for you to decide. There is the expectation that your final piece will reflect the 9 months that you have to work on this project, 9 months will feel like a long long time if you don't choose something that interests you to study. So think carefully and try and avoid the cliches.

You will start your project with a blog of your own, you will create and design your blog to relect you and your project. The expectation is for you to use this space as a visual and written diary, you will search for inspiration and comment on it here, you will write about your ideas and the struggles you will have. You will be able to upload photos and videos....use the media at you fingertips. If you see something inspiring whilst you are out and only have your mobile phone with you, then use it, upload it and comment on it.

You will be expected to learn to browse the internet, succesfully finding the work of deigners and artists to inspire your own work. You can dedicate a post to them, you can add them to your list of links (useful for you to be able to find things you like 5 months down the line). What ever you do, if you use a photograph from someones website, you MUST credit it. That means that under the photograph you must add the name of the photographer and the website that you found it. Link to it, and send your own link to the site that you found it from, they will love to hear how you are inspired by them.

Your blog will be a major part of your assessment, I will expect you to create a series of sketchbook pages that will evolve from your posts.

I will be following your blogs and will, when I feel I need to, make comments on your posts. Don't worry though, that doesn't mean that I will be giving you any negative comments...I may question you now and again though, just to make you think harder. I also expect you to follow this blog as it will be where I can communicate with you en mass on the days that I am not in school.

I hope you enjoy this way of working, I don't expect you to comment everyday. But I do expect every week, at least.
